Beware of Fish Sold as Striper!
We recently visited Trader Joe's, a specialty grocery store with locations near some major metropolitan areas in the US. Whenever we frequest this store on the north side of Indianapolis, we always checkout the frozen seafood isle. This time we noticed a fish called "Striper" that was farm-raised in Vietnam. Our first reaction was that Vietnam was now farm-raising Striped Bass from the USA, however, internet searches yielded nothing so we contacted Trader Joe's through their website.

Here is our e-mail along with Trader Joe's response:

"I noticed a frozen fish called "Striper" from Vietnam. I tried to research this fish on the internet and came up empty. The packaging said it's farm-raised in Vietnam. I assume this "Striper" is the catfish that's farm-raised in Vietnam called Basa fish as it appears to be identical to a Basa fish you recently sold at Trader Joe's called Chef Al Bocourti's White Ruffy Brand Bocourti fillets (which is basa fish - i.e. catfish that's farm-raised in the Mekong River)..........Please give me some more information on this "Striper." I suspect this is a new name created to market this nasty catfish from the filthy Mekong river in Vietnam. I refuse to eat such fish."

Here was Trader Joe's response:

"We appreciate your inquiry. Striper is not a member of the catfish family. It is a member of the Pangasius family and is yet to establish a common name in the US, thus the use of the name striper fillets. It is a white meat, fresh water fish farm raised in the delta river system. It is called striper because of the stripe along its side as a juvenile. We hope this is helpful.

Sincerely,
Amy

WOW - Trader Joe's is way off base as PANGASIUS IS A FAMILY OF CATFISH (a 2-second search on the internet will tell you that). It would appear that Trader Joe's does not research their products very well. We were right again and this so-called "Striper" is another attempt by someone to disguise catfish that are farm-raised in the filthy Mekong river in Vietnam. The deception continues and consumers deserve better!

"Oh, it's farm-raised"
While visiting relatives in South Florida over the holidays, Becky and I visited several seafood hotspots in sunny Sarasota, Florida on Florida's west coast. Sarasota is located about an hours drive south of Tampa.

I have never been to a Shells Restaurant, however Becky has been to one on Florida's east coast before so I jumped at the opportunity to stop. Since it had been some time since Becky had visited Shells, she could not remember if they served catfish. We arrived and I scanned the menu. Alas, catfish on the menu, however, no mention of U.S. farm-raised, only the words "catfish." When the server asked me what I wanted, I asked "is the catfish U.S. farm-raised catfish?. She responded, "oh, it's farm-raised." I replied, "but, is it U.S. farm-raised." She gave me a dumbfounded look as if I was stupid or something. I replied, "just because it is farm-raised does NOT mean it is U.S. farm-raised. There is farm-raised catfish from Asia, China, Brazil, and probably other places too. If it's not U.S. farm-raised catfish, I don't want it." She replied that she would find out. She returned after several minutes and said, "the chef said it's probably from Thailand." I settled for the sirloin steak but I WANT MY U.S. FARM-RAISED CATFISH!

Moral of the story, don't always assume when the menu says catfish that it's U.S. farm-raised catfish (farm-raised does NOT always mean U.S. farm-raised either). Restaurants serving U.S. farm-raised catfish need to be proud of serving the high quality product and MUST start including this information on their menus!

We also visited one of our favorite seafood restaurants in Sarasota, Florida called Phillipi Creek Oyster Bar. This place is nestled on the water along US 41 in south Sarasota and is a must visit when in the area. Becky and I used to live in Sarasota and made this a weekly visit. We really enjoyed dining right on the water where you could even see fish in the water.

Since it had been four years since I've been to Phillipi Creek and the menu still said "catfish," I asked the server if it was U.S. farm-raised catfish. Now, I don't know if servers just aren't listening, but the response I got was "oh, it's farm-raised." I again had to go into my spiel about farm-raised does not necessarily mean U.S. farm-raised. The server returned about five minutes later and said it was U.S. farm-raised (which it had always been in the past, but I don't take any chances). I thoroughly enjoyed my catfish dinner and Becky likewise. Becky ordered hers blackened and it looked incredible. She always opts for the healthier preparations of catfish (non-fried) when possible and I'm usually looking over at her plate wishing I had ordered the same as her, but, once a fan of great fried catfish, it's hard to change habits!

Note: Phillipi Creek is not on our listings as it's a seafood/oyster bar and catfish is not considered a specialty.

U.S. vs Asian Catfish
The best catfish available is U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish as it's a certified fresh, high quality, clean and safe choice. Watch out for cheap foreign catfish such as the Vietnamese Basa & Tra fish and the catfish farm-raised in China. There have been a vast multitude of quality issues with foreign catfish ranging from the use of banned antibiotics to raising them in highly polluted waters. Just because catfish is farm-raised does NOT mean it's U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish. If you have any doubt as to the origin of catfish when dining out, be sure to ask your server if it's U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish (be especially wary of cafeterias & buffets offering "white fish"). If your server doesn't know the country of origin, ask them to find out before ordering. Our internet searches have found the Vietnamese catfish to be marketed under more than 50 different names! Recently we've even found this nasty catfish for sale as "striper" in a national specialty grocery store!

Thank you for visiting our website and please do contact us if you know of any listings we don't have. We appreciate your feedback!

Nashville Catfish Restaurant
Bob W. from Nashville recently e-mailed us with a great recommendation for catfish dining when you're in the Nashville area.

"Being a Tennessean, born and raised in the country, we LOVE our catfish! We now live in Nashville and our favorite place for catfish is the Catfish Kitchen (located on Hwy. 70 traveling west between Nashville and Dickson). Catfish Kitchen has the BEST hushpuppies ever! The serve vinegar slaw and white beans with the fish dinner along with all-you-can-eat hushpuppies. The catfish is filleted and you can get the hot & spicy version which is also delicious."
